Carnegie Mellon University's Environment Health & Safety FAQ

| Injured at Work | Odor Complaints | Ergonomics | Training

  • Injured at Work :

Q:  What do I do if I am injured at work?

A:  First, be sure to get the proper treatment for your injury.  If you need to be seen at a hospital, call University Police at 8-2323 and they will arrange for transportation for you.

You should also inform your supervisor, who will submit a Supervisor’s Injury/Illness Report. One copy of the report should go to Human Resources, another to EH&S, and a copy should be kept in your department.

For more detailed information on accident reporting, visit our Accident Page.

  • Odor Complaints:

Q:  What do I do if I smell something unusual?

A: The first thing you should do is try to identify the source.  Check drains and traps to be sure they haven’t gone dry.  See if anyone is working in the area who may be using something that may be generating the odor.  Look in garbage cans to see if it may be coming from there.  If you can’t locate the source, then call EH&S and provide as much information as you can (what it smells like, how large an area is affected, where you have looked, etc.).

  • Ergonomics:

Q:  How do I set up my work area so that I am in the proper position?

A: Detailed directions on setting up your work area can be found on our Ergonomics webpage.

Q:  How do I request an ergonomic evaluation?

A: Evaluations are scheduled electronically. The link to the registration request form is located at http://ehs-alert.fms.bap.cmu.edu/Occupational_Safety/ergonomics.htm.

  • Training:

Q:  How can I register for a training class?

A: Go to http://ehs-alert.fms.bap.cmu.edu/Training/training.htm and click on the link for the class you want to attend. The dates of all scheduled classes, plus a link to the registration form, are found at the end of the course description paragraph. Clicking on that link will take you directly to the registration form..
